Android tar allt fler marknadsandelar och antalet appar blir allt fler. Techradar har listat vad de anser vare “20 best free Android apps”. Bland annat listar de en app som låter dig spara dina appar på minneskortet i stället för i telefonens inbyggda minne.

Current rumour has it the forthcoming Android 2.2 update known as “FroYo” will let users save their Android Market purchases to their phone’s SD card, freeing up valuable in-phone memory. But at the moment, the only way to have your apps installed to card is via an app like AppSaver – it’s one of the odd quirks Android fans have been suffering with since the OS launched.

New York Times har en intressant artikel om hur relationen mellan Apple och Google har förändrats sen lanseringen av Iphone.

Google and Apple had worked together to bring Google’s search and mapping services to the iPhone, the executives told the audience, and Mr. Schmidt joked that the collaboration was so close that the two men should simply merge their companies and call them “AppleGoo.”

(…) Today, such warmth is in short supply. Mr. Jobs, Mr. Schmidt and their companies are now engaged in a gritty battle royale over the future and shape of mobile computing and cellphones, with implications that are reverberating across the digital landscape.

In the last six months, Apple and Google have jousted over acquisitions, patents, directors, advisers and iPhone applications. Mr. Jobs and Mr. Schmidt have taken shots at each other’s companies in the media and in private exchanges with employees.

Apple believes that devices like smartphones and tablets should have tightly controlled, proprietary standards and that customers should take advantage of services on those gadgets with applications downloaded from Apple’s own App Store.

Google, on the other hand, wants smartphones to have open, nonproprietary platforms so users can freely roam the Web for apps that work on many devices. Google has long feared that rivals like Microsoft or Apple or wireless carriers like Verizon could block access to its services on devices like smartphones, which could soon eclipse computers as the primary gateway to the Web. Google’s promotion promotion of Android is, essentially, an effort to control its destiny in the mobile world.

Collabtive är ett öppet källkodsprojekt inriktat på projekthantering. Du kan hantera projekt, lägga upp uppgifter, tilldela uppgifter till användare, lägga till milstenar, rapportera tid, och generera rapporter. Du kan också importera projekt från Basecamp.

Collabtive is web-based project management software.

The project was started in November 2007. It is Open Source software and provides an alternative to proprietary tools like Basecamp. Collabtive is written in PHP and JavaScript.

Collabtive is intended for small to medium-sized businesses and freelancers.
All major browsers like Internet Explorer (7/8), Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Chrome are supported.

WordPress 2.9 RC 1

Nu finns release candidate 1 av WordPress 2.9 tillgänglig för nedladdning. Bland annat introduceras nyheter som möjlighet att beskära, skala och rotera bilder.

Dessutom finns:

Papperkorg som ger dig möjlighet att återskapa raderade poster
Batchuppdatering av tillägg
Möjlighet att publicera tumnaglar
Möjligt att inkludera eller exkludera bilder i ett galleri.

StoryTlr blir open source

Life streaming projektet StoryTlr lägger ner sitt projekt men släpper koden som open source. Nu kan du installera tjänsten på din egna server. StoryTlrs släpps under Apache 2 licensen vilket innebär att det kan användas även för kommeriella tjänster.

FCKEditor -> CKEditor

WYSIWYG-editorn FCKEditor har bytt namn till CKEditor och kommit ut i version 3. Den nya versionen ska ladda snabbare och vara snabbare att använda. CKEditor har också ett helt nytt gränssnitt och är pluginbaserad vilket gör det enkelt att anpassa och bygga ut funktionaliteten. CKEditor integrerar med bland annat JavaScript, AFP, ASP, ASP.NET, ColdFusion, Java, PHP, Python, Adobe AIR etc..

CKEditor is distribueras under GPL, LGPL and MPL licenserna.

Open Atrium – Intranät out of the box

Open Atrium ser ut att bli något riktigt intressant. Baserat på Drupal bygger utvecklarna ett open source system som från början ska innehålla projektytor med ett antal verktyg som blogg, wiki, kalender, todo och mikroblogg.

Out of the box you can create different spaces for different projects, add people to each space, and turn on different tools within each space, including a blog, a wiki, a calendar, a casetracker, and a micro blog.

WordPress MU avslutas

Enligt The Blog Herald kommer WordPress MU sluta utvecklas och i stället migreras in i WordPress. Troligtvis kommer detta ske i samband med att WordPress 3 släpps. The Blog Herald citarar” the lead developers” blog:

Basically, the thin layer of code that allows WordPress MU to host multiple WordPress blogs will be merged into WordPress. I expect the WordPress MU project itself will come to an end because it won’t be needed any more (which saddens me), but on the other hand many more people will be working on that very same MU code which means more features and more bugfixes and faster too.

Next Wednesday, June 10th, is the target date for the release of WordPress 2.8. Tickets against the 2.8 milestone that are not blockers will be postponed to another release.
